    iPhone 11 review

The iPhone 11 is something of a surprise - it brings more advanced technology (namely in the camera capabilities and the processing power

under the hood) and yet offers it for less than the iPhone XR cost in 2018. It combines a large 6.1-inch display with a premium-feeling body,

and comes in an array of colors too.

The most eye-catching feature of the new iPhone is to the imaging capabilities: with two sensors on the rear, you can now take wider-angle

snaps alongside the ‘normal’ main images. These sensors are 12MP each, and are raised from the rear of the phone in a square glass enclosure - which we’re not enamored with visually.

The night mode is the most impressive part of the iPhone 11 imaging quality, bringing brightness and clarity to impossibly dark scenes,

and the Portrait mode, defocusing the background, is improved on the new iPhone too.

The design hasn’t updated much from the iPhone XR in 2018, although there are now six colors - including a new lilac and mint green shade to

choose from. The edges of the iPhone 11 still have the same feel as the older iPhone 6, 7 and 8, although the larger 6.1-inch display in the

middle takes up most of the front of the phone (although with slightly thick borders around the screen).

That display is bright enough and responds well under the finger, with bright sunlight performance good and the overall movie and video

streaming playback strong - although not in the same league as the OLED-toting iPhone 11 Pro range.

The general design is similar to last year's iPhone range. (Image credit: TechRadar)

Apple claims that the battery life of the iPhone 11 is an hour longer than that of the impressive iPhone XR, and in our tests this largely bore out.We were able to eke 24 hours’ use out of it without needing to try too hard - although sadly there’s no fast charger in the box,so if you do deplete the power pack you’ll need to wait around three hours before it’s fully juiced up.The overall speed and performance of the iPhone 11 is robust - and especially so for the price. It’s still one of the most powerful phones outthere, according to our early benchmarks. In reality that just translates to a solid experience when flipping in and out of apps - although we did note that the speed in firing up the camerawas a little slow, and processing pictures took longer than expected for a modern phone. That said, given you can edit 4K footage at 60 frames per second on a smartphone, it seems like a pretty powerful device to have in your pocket- especially if you’re a social influencer.Overall the iPhone 11 is a triumph for Apple - if, for nothing else, the fact it’s managed to lower the price year-on-year. We feel enough peopleare going to be won over by the hard-working camera (check the night mode samples further down this review to see what we mean) and thesafety that buying a modern smartphone gives you.You should be able to achieve years of use from this phone, and sure, you could also consider the iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max if you want more power and higher spec, but we found the iPhone 11 to be fun to use and often outperformed what we would expect given theprice - and that's a feat some wouldn't have expected from Apple.

    iPhone 11 pro review

The iPhone 11 Pro is Apple's latest iPhone that has people asking us "What's really changed?" It's a fair question because it looks very similar to last year's iPhone. But use the new cameras for a few minutes and both that question and inquisitive looks from doubters quickly fade.

Apple put a lot of effort into its triple-lens rear camera, offering a trio of 12MP lenses that shoot regular, telephoto, and brand new ultra-wide perspectives. Not having to back up to fit everything into the widened frame is a big perk. Also, all of our friends appreciate not having their heads cut off in portrait photos.

Like the last few iPhones the 11 Pro is able to survive a dunking thanks to IP68 waterproofing. (Image credit: Future)

'Night Mode', meanwhile, addresses the single biggest complaint we've heard from iPhone users over the years: photos in dimly-lit bars and restaurants don't look very good – not next to their Android phone-touting friends. The shame!

Good news: the iPhone 11 Pro has the best low-light camera we've tested on a phone – any phone. Apple brightens with the best of them and its night mode is automatically applied, topping Samsung, Huawei and Google's interfaces.

Video looks and sounds best-in-class from the oversized rear cameras, yet we found the biggest year-over-year leap in the physically smaller 12MP front camera. It now records in 4K and shoots slo-mo video. Apple's 'Slofies' work best with long, flowing hair to whip back and forth, so we had to get creative in our tests.

So much of the iPhone 11 Pro is about the camera, but there's a bit more. We found battery life noticeably better than the iPhone XS – we've gone longer than a day with heavy use. You don't need the Pro Max for its battery prowess. Its matte finish back cover looks nicer and feels less slippery, though it won't wow as much if you immediately stick an iPhone 11 Pro case on it (which we do recommend).

The 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro is the one to get if you want the most advanced iPhone that's easy to use with one hand. It feels a lot smaller than the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max and 6.1-inch iPhone 11. Don't be fooled by its size, though, it's pricier than the telephoto-and-OLED-lacking entry-level iPhone 11.

It doesn't look different from past iPhones on the front, so it may seem hard to justify the price. But if you've been waiting for better photos and video out of a new iPhone, this is it – and that's more important than a new look or 5G, at least in 2019.

iPhone 11 Pro release date and price

    • iPhone 11 Pro release date was September 20, 2019
    • iPhone 11 Pro price started at $999 / £1,049 / AU$1,749

The iPhone 11 Pro was announced on September 12 2019 and the official release date was later that month on September 20. It sells for Pro-level pricing, although in most regions, you're going to pay the same amount as you did for the iPhone XS and iPhone X.

It costs $999 (£1,049, AU$1,749) at launch for the iPhone 11 Pro 64GB version. That's not enough storage for most people with a decade worth of iPhone photos and video, even with iCloud to offload some files. And there's no 128GB option, sadly.

You may instead pay $1,149 (£1,119, AU$1,999) for the 256GB version, the ideal size for most iPhone 11 Pro shoppers, or go all-in for the 512GB size at $1,349 (£1,399, AU$2,349). There's no expandable storage here, like all iPhones before this one, meaning you'll get better storage-for-price value from top Android phones.

You'll also get Apple TV Plus for a year when you buy the new handset, and you may be able to find more appropriate deals for you through carriers and networks using the links below.

    iPhone 11 Pro Max reviews:

There's nearly nothing wrong with the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The screen is excellent, games run lag-free, and the triple-camera system is versatile and effective, but what I've been most impressed by is its battery life. I've had to force myself to use the phone even more than normal to hit 30 percent before midnight.

Like the iPhone X and its notch, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have a controversial design that seems to have divided everyone.

A lot of people don’t like the way the three lenses protrude in a squircle-shaped bump that also houses the LED flash and microphone. The holes are reportedly triggering people’s trypophobia (fear of clusters of holes and bumps).

I’m not dismissing trypophobia, but having used the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max for a week ahead of its release, I can definitively say everyone needs to chill out.

Almost everyone I’ve shown the iPhone 11 Pro to say it’s not as offensive in person — the lens rings aren’t nearly as thick as closeup images make them appear — and the design is one of a kind (for now).

The fact that I literally couldn’t go anywhere in New York City without drawing attention from people who spotted the triple cameras suggests the iPhone 11 Pros already have what Android phones could only dream of: celebrity status.

Once you get over the camera bump, you'll see the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are more "pro" than meets the eye. I'll take the most versatile camera system, the longest battery life of any iPhone, and the most secure mobile operating system over a new design that's different for the sake of being different any day.

    The Bottom Line
Apple's iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are serious threats to mirrorless and DSLR cameras.

Unlike the iPhone 11, which costs $50 less than the iPhone XR did when it launched, the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max aren't cheaper. They have the same premium prices introduced with the iPhone X.

The iPhone 11 Pro starts at $999 and the 11 Pro Max at $1,099 for 64GB of storage; $1,149 and $1,249 for 256GB of storage; and $1,349 and $1,449 for 512GB of storage.

I'm less bothered by these prices — monthly installment plans help split up the cost — and more by the fact the base storage is still 64GB. A $1,000+ "pro" iPhone shouldn't have the same amount of base storage as a $700 iPhone 11.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 10, which starts at $949, comes with four times the storage as an entry-level iPhone 11 Pro. This isn't cool, Apple. If you're getting an iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max, I recommend ignoring the 64GB and getting at least 256GB. You can thank me later when you're not frantically deleting apps and photos because you're running low on storage.

    IPHONE 6 REVIEW

    Let’s start with the facts.

There is explosive demand for bigger smartphones. A 4-inch smartphone feels small now; somewhere around 5 inches is the new normal. Yet too many large-screen phones are cumbersome awkward and often just plain bad. And Apple has a long history of taking good ideas with obviously huge markets and being the first manufacturer to really nail the execution.

Add those three things together and this phone on my desk isn’t at all surprising. It’s the iPhone 6: a bigger brighter badder iPhone designed to appeal to the customers for whom the iPhone 5S and its 4-inch screen now seem adorably antiquated. (Which is basically everybody.) It starts at $199 on a two-year contract and comes in silver gold and space gray. It’s full of new technology and crafted from a new mold. Apple intends for it to be the new standard in a new type of smartphone to be the big-screen phone that anyone can handle. Not the first big phone but the best. The big phone for everyone.

Of course Samsung HTC and others have been making big phones too and they have years of iteration and millions of sales to show for it. This is Cupertino’s steepest climb yet: can it leapfrog the entrenched competition and prove that Apple can do better?

The big iPhone has a big job to do.

ALSO: READ OUR IPHONE 6 PLUS REVIEW

The whole time I’ve had the iPhone 6 I’ve been playing a game. I hand the phone to someone and guess what phone they use based on their immediate reaction. iPhone users are always shocked by the sheer size of the 6; they all think it must be the 6 Plus. Android users on the other hand are unfazed. "This looks just like my phone " they all say.

They’re not wrong. The iPhone 6 is 5.44 inches tall and 2.64 inches wide which slots it right in between last year’s Moto X (also a 4.7-inch phone) and the new HTC One. It’s almost exactly the same size as Samsung’s Galaxy S5 just a little thinner and a little lighter. And it shares more in common with the world’s many Android phones — and the original curvy iPhone — than with the sharp rectangular iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 5S was a stark piece of jewelry a gorgeous object that was slightly cold and unapproachable. The iPhone 6 is far friendlier and far more usable. Mixing form and function this way is hard to do and Apple gets it largely right.

It’s simply and cleanly designed with a metal back that curves cleanly around the sides. There are few seams and no ugly clutter. The only real flaw is the antenna design: Apple opted to essentially outline the top and bottom of the phone’s back with small plastic stripes where wireless radios can transmit signal. It just looks bad like someone drew on my phone with a marker. HTC’s simple striped design on the One M8 is far better and even Apple’s glass-strip-on-the-top-and-bottom approach for the 5S looked nicer.

In a weird way slim and gorgeous as it is this iPhone begs to have a case on it. (Apple makes some including a really nice line of leather cases and the third-party ecosystem is going to get even bigger.) It helps obscure the unsightly plastic strips it makes the otherwise slick phone a little easier to grip and it compensates for the awkwardly protruding camera lens on the back which prevents the phone from sitting flat on a table. I’m worried I’m going to scratch the lens and I’m annoyed that the phone wobbles. A case solves both problems.

The 6 is big much bigger than the 5S or the other iPhones that came before it. It’s even bigger than some other 4.7-inch phones; because Apple refuses to change the top and bottom bezels so as not to disturb the big home button the phone is much taller than it needs to be. But it’s still usable in one hand and comfortable enough that I never feel terribly awkward using it. I have found myself holding it slightly differently though: I tend to rest it on my fingers rather than grip it in my palm the better to reach the farthest corners of the screen.

The screen of course is the whole reason the iPhone 6 exists. It’s 4.7 inches diagonal: 1334 pixels tall by 750 wide. It’s not the pixel density curve-breaker that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is but it’s an extremely good display. It has great color reproduction and phenomenal viewing angles it’s viewable even in bright light thanks to a new polarizer and my eyes can’t make out individual pixels anywhere. The glass on the front slopes ever so softly into the curved metallic edge giving the iPhone 6 a sort of infinity pool effect: the screen just never seems to end.

There’s something perfectly polished about the way it feels to use this screen. I’ve never felt so much like I was truly moving things around under my finger manipulating icons and pictures by hand. It’s organic and natural in a distinctly Apple way.

THE IPHONE 6 DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A GADGET

With only a couple of small exceptions this is the right way to build a larger phone. It’s thinner more comfortable more friendly to the touch. But what Apple didn’t do was come up with a way to take advantage of the new screen's real estate or make it easier to navigate. Other devices have clever screen-unlock mechanisms or styluses or split-screen multitasking or always-on voice control. (The iPhone 6 does let you yell "hey Siri!" to give voice commands from across the room but only when it’s plugged in.) Apple is clearly saying a big phone is better but it doesn’t answer the critical question: how is it different?

The 6 Plus at least gestures in this direction. A few apps work in landscape with handy two-pane modes and even the home screen rotates on its side. On the "smaller" model though the only concession to gargantuanism is Reachability in which you double-tap (but don’t click) the home button and the whole screen just slides downward. It does the job I suppose but it just looks like you broke something when there’s only half an app on the screen and the rest of the display is empty.

Apple had a chance here to not simply make a bigger iPhone but to really think through how we might use a bigger iPhone differently. How a bigger iPhone changes what we can do or see or interact with on one display. But Apple didn’t do any of that. It just made a bigger better iPhone.

In many ways of course a bigger better iPhone is a pretty remarkable thing. Everywhere you look it’s clear that Apple spent the last year tweaking and improving every square inch of the iPhone. There’s the new A8 processor which makes everything from launching apps to playing games to switching home screens noticeably faster than even the 5S. The A8 also comes with a new bundle of sensors called the M8 "motion co-processor " which is what the iPhone 6 uses to passively track your steps elevation and more.

The iPhone 6’s battery is one of the primary beneficiaries of both this relentless tweaking — and the addition of some new hardware real estate. The phone can easily last me a day and a half from one morning to the next afternoon no matter how much I use it. I still charge it almost every night but at least I’m not forced to baby the battery just to get it through dinner anymore.

NFC finally comes built in which enables the upcoming tap-to-buy Apple Pay system. There’s also support for faster LTE and Voice over LTE (on T-Mobile for now) plus new Wi-Fi standards and even Wi-Fi calling (also on T-Mobile). The bottom-mounted speaker is louder and brighter than on the 5S. (It still sucks it’s just louder now.) These subtle improvements don’t feel significant or obvious individually but taken together they make the iPhone feel more reliable and more polished. The iPhone 6 is not terribly exciting or groundbreaking. It’s just excellent.

There’s one feature that stands out though the one that most strongly makes the iPhone 6’s case as the best smartphone on the planet: the camera. It still shoots 8-megapixel images but this time does so with a new sensor. It also uses what Apple calls "focus pixels" to achieve phase-detect autofocus which is just astonishingly fast on the iPhone 6. I move the phone around and it never appears to be focusing yet everything is always crisp and ready. There are some manual controls available like exposure lock and I still tap to focus sometimes but it’s never been faster to just whip the phone out of my pocket and fire.

The iPhone 6 takes panorama photos in higher resolution now and in general takes better pictures than any smartphone I’ve ever used. But shooting video is where this iPhone feels most improved. You can shoot 1080p video at 60 frames per second which is cool but I spent way more time shooting at 240 frames per second. Slow-motion video is awesome (and available on a handful of Android phones too) and at 240 fps even the most mundane activity becomes awesomely cinematic. Everything looks cool slowed down that much. Everything.

    SERIOUSLY: SHOOT SLOW-MOTION VIDEO

Everything also looks better thanks to the new "cinematic stabilization " which does an impressive job steadying my shaky hands. I can film while walking or out the window of a bumpy taxi and the video comes out smooth and jitter-free. The picture warps and bends ever so slightly as it processes and compensates but it’s well worth the tradeoff for video that won’t make you vomit. Like the slow-motion video and the time-lapse images this stabilization makes anything look better. I’ve already shot and shared far more video on the iPhone 6 than on any smartphone I’ve ever used.

The iPhone 6’s hardware is good even great but there’s little about it that’s truly ambitious or truly moving the needle. It’s just a refinement of a lot of existing ideas into a much more pleasant package. Some of the ideas are Apple’s improved over time — like Maps which is finally not a tragic comedy of an app — and some are lifted from competitors. In the case of the iPhone 6 there’s a lot of both.

Last year iOS 7 was truly innovative. It had a new look new features new ideas about how we’d all use smartphones. A lot of those ideas were great a lot of them were bad and the whole OS felt chaotic as a result. This year Apple presents refinement in the form of iOS 8.

The new OS is hyper-focused on making common actions simple and accessible. The keyboard has predictive typing guessing (often accurately but sometimes hilariously not so) what you’re about to say. It’s really handy though I’ve become so fast typing on the larger screen that I hardly needed it anyway. There are quicker ways to respond to text messages and at the top of the multitasking menu there’s a list of people you’ve recently contacted. All over the OS there are these small tune-ups that make everything a little faster a little more obvious. You can remove yourself from annoying group messages send quick audio messages (voicemail is back!) and save documents much more easily with iCloud Drive.

    iPhone 6 screenshots

I’m particularly smitten with Spotlight which now includes the App Store web local and other search results as you type. It’s become my go-to way to find anything; it’s much faster than opening Safari or dealing with Siri which can be fantastically useful but remains hard of hearing.

iOS adapts passably if not perfectly to the iPhone 6’s larger display. A few of Apple’s apps are updated for the new resolutions which usually means just showing more on the screen at once. Most third-party apps (at least until they’re updated which won’t take long) are just scaled up so you get slightly larger text and pictures as if everything was pinch-zoomed just one step. Things look and work fine they’re just big. I had none of the crashing or comical-white-space-and-blurry-text problems of the 6 Plus — it scales simply and mostly imperceptibly.

Unfortunately a lot of iOS 8’s best new features aren’t available just yet. I couldn’t test Continuity which lets you move calls and texts between devices or the neat Handoff feature that lets you pick up on one device right where you left off on another. Nor could I really do much with Extensions or the new sharing menu which make it easier to move data between iOS apps. Those are the pillars of the new platform making both apps and devices work better together. They’re the future of iOS and OS X. If they work they’re more than just refined —they’re innovative. But they’re still for a few more weeks at least in the future.

Everything is better and nothing is different.

That’s the story of the iPhone 6. Apple took this opportunity to upgrade nearly everything about the device from Wi-Fi to LTE to build quality to the already remarkable camera. And since it has a big-enough screen but still works well in one hand and fits snugly in my pocket this is a device that almost every phone buyer on the planet will at least consider. The iPhone 6 is utterly without obvious problems or drawbacks — it’s going to be a huge hit. I’m going to buy one. (Space Gray 64GB Verizon in case you were wondering.)

Yet there’s nothing truly ambitious here no grand vision of the future or of a new way of living in the present. Apple doesn’t have better ideas about how to make use of more display real estate or how to help users navigate a bigger device. It’s not on the precipice of offering a new kind of do-it-all computer as it might be with the iPhone 6 Plus. The latest iPhones could have been a chance for Apple to really re-examine what smartphone hardware should be but Apple just built a bigger iPhone. Because that’s what people wanted.

For a variety of reasons from the camera to the app ecosystem to the hardware itself the iPhone 6 is one of the best smartphones on the market. Maybe even the best. But it’s still an iPhone. The same thing Apple’s been making for seven years. A fantastically good iPhone but an iPhone through and through.

If you're looking for an affordable iPhone, the iPhone XR is a strong contender boasting the latest software, enough power and surprisingly good battery life... for an iPhone. With the introduction of the iPhone 11, the XR price has dropped further, making it great value for money.

    FOR

    • Great battery life for an iPhone
    • Attractive array of colors
    • A great value option

    AGAINST

    • Portrait camera mode doesn't impress
    • Some apps still not fully optimized
    • Lower-res screen

The iPhone XR was a marketing masterstroke for Apple: not only did it delay the launch of the third of its trio of 2018 iPhones, thus creating some mystery around it, it’s also managed to make this seem like 2018's 'cheap' iPhone.

By cheap we mean when compared to its contemporaries, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, but we’re talking certainly not talking budget prices.

However, with the launch of the iPhone 11 in 2019, the iPhone XR price has dropped, making it a highly affordable option for anyone looking for an iPhone with the current Face ID and notch design language that doesn't break the bank.

If you're loving your iPhones XR, or considering buying one, the package has got a lot more tempting now that iOS 13 has handed on the handset.

    Only a single camera

Arguably the most impressive thing about the iPhone XS is the camera, as it’s the only thing that feels significantly upgraded over the iPhone X. While the iPhone XR offers the same ‘standard’ lens as the XS, it lacks the telephoto second sensor, so has to do some fancy tricks with software to compensate.

This means you won’t be able to zoom in as far with the XR, as the telephoto lens offers (relatively) lossless photography at two times zoom, while portrait mode, where the background is blurred out, isn’t as effective.

You can still take a portrait shot and have the background attractively blurred to keep the focus on the subject, but unlike with the iPhone XS, you can’t take pictures of objects and animals in the same way.

This is due to the fact the software can’t identify those subjects as easily from the single sensor, where the additional hardware on the more expensive XS is able to draw on more info.

    The Liquid Retina screen

    iPhone XR Screen Repair

    iPhone XR

Apple is never one to shy away from some marketing hyperbole, and the iPhone XR comes with a ‘new’ type of LCD, a screen that’s been designed to allow it to make this curved, ‘all-screen’ display.

No 3D Touch on the iPhone XR

There’s one way to know if you use a feature on an iPhone, and that’s to take it away, and see if you miss it. Anyone coming from a later-series Apple handset will have had access to 3D Touch, where pressing the screen harder opens menus or activates different features in apps.

This feature has been removed for the iPhone XR, presumably to save money – instead you have to do a ‘long press’ to do the same thing. So if you ever accessed shortcuts by pushing harder on an app, or opened the torch with a harder prod on the lock screen… well, that’s gone.

We didn’t realise how much we used that feature before – and it’s irritating to not have something that feels like a real button to open the camera – but it doesn’t take long to get used to the alternative… it just feels a bit less premium

HDR, the battery management is better and the chipset is far more powerful inside. These are all just tweaks though, and it was smart from Apple to remove the iPhone X from sale, as that would have been a far more attractive option prior to the launch of the iPhone 11 range.

    FOR

    • Smart HDR helps the camera
    • More powerful again
    • Fast operation in the hand

    AGAINST

    • Battery life not world-beating
    • Design not altered in a year
    • Still very expensive

This is the iPhone XS – pronounced ‘10-S’, not ‘excess’ as you might think. It looks identical to 2017's iPhone X, and you might think that not a lot has changed – but it’s inside where the differences lie.

This is a weird situation for a review; usually, when looking at an ‘S’ variant of an iPhone we’re asking the question of whether it’s better than the now-cheaper model from the previous year.

In 2019, however, Apple made the choice to discontinue the iPhone XS to make way for the iPhone 11iPhone 11 Pro (which is its direct successor) and iPhone 11 Pro Max. So while we can draw comparisons they won’t help you make an informed choice unless you pick up an iPhone XS from a third party - which will be cheaper than one of the new flagships.

That pricetag drops even more on Black Friday and Cyber Monday - including the weeks leading up to those discount holidays. Keep checking our best Black Friday iPhone deals page for the latest offers.

The devices change over time, too, thanks to software updates. The iPhone XS package is about to get a lot more tempting now that iOS 13 is landing imminently.

Apple's latest operating system, which will be available to the iPhone XS, brings many new features like Dark Mode and a range of app speed increases, so you can make the most of your iPhone experience.

Each three has new and improved specs over the 2018 iPhones, but the latter two are also more expensive.

Alongside the iPhone 11 range announcement, Apple confirmed that it would no longer sell the iPhone XS – it's being dropped from the company's line, but that doesn't mean you can't buy it. Retailers and carriers will still stock it for a while to come, so if this review gets you excited to own it, that's still a possibility.

In 2018, the iPhone XS launched alongside the iPhone XR – it’s a more affordable handset than the iPhone XS, but packs in many of the same features, making it in many ways more impressive. Plus, unlike the iPhone XS, it's still on sale.

    • New gold color option
    • Same design and similar features as last gen

Usually in this section we'd talk about all the new features that the phone brings – but in this case there really aren't that many, with Apple resolutely sticking to the strategy of launching an 'S' phone with little changed other than speed improvements and a few other performance bumps.

That's not to say it isn't impressive, and useful, new hardware in the iPhone XS, but most of the benefits won't be instantly discernible to the average user.

One change that is easy to spot is the new color: the gold variant is more mocha than anything else, with a touch of copper in the shade, and brings another option in addition to the Space Gray and silver options.

We can only surmise that this was possible because the chassis of the iPhone XS is so similar to that of the iPhone X, so it wasn't expensive or time-consuming to alter the process to add in a new hue.

    A12 Bionic chipset

    iPhone XS

The iPhone XS and XS Max both have the same chipset inside
    • Loads of power
    • Neural Engine brings enhancements throughout
    • Notably more powerful AR capabilities

Apple is proudly talking up its new chipset, and with good reason: it's one of the most powerful on a smartphone, created as it was using a 7nm process.

That may not mean much to most people, but essentially it means that more transistors can be chucked onto this hexa-core CPU, which has two 'power' cores and four more that are optimized for efficiency.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max Cheat Sheet

    • The cameras are good, and the new Depth Control for portraits works well.
    • Apple's A12 Bionic chip is once again faster than any Android phone.
    • The iPhone XS Max is more compelling than the regular iPhone XS because of its larger 6.5-inch screen and longer battery life.
    • The lack of USB-C fast charging out of the box for both phones is a bummer.
    • The iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS are worth upgrading to if you own an iPhone 7 or earlier device, but some may prefer the cheaper iPhone XR or new iPhone 11.

Camera: Catching Up to (and Sometimes Beating) Pixel 2

If there's one area where the Apple needed to improve the iPhone, it's the camera. Google's Pixel 2 beat the iPhone X in our face-off, especially in low light. The iPhone XS and XS Max even the score with dual 12-MP cameras that have bigger and deeper pixels that let in up to 50 percent more light without sacrificing sharpness.

Examine this photo in a bar we shot on the iPhone XS, Pixel 2 XL and Galaxy Note 9. The Note 9's shot is the most vibrant, but the iPhone X delivers stunning detail when you zoom in, allowing us to read the text on the bottles. Plus, the upper-left area of the image didn't get blown out as it did on the other two phones.

The iPhone XS also benefits from a new Smart HDR mode, which Apple says takes advantage of faster sensors, an enhanced ISP and advanced algorithms to offer more highlights and shadow details in photos. I saw the improvement in shots like this, where I could see more of the eagle in the iPhone XS that got lost in the original iPhone X's image.

In this shot of colorful cupcakes, the iPhone XS once again delivers more detail, especially when you zoom in to see the frosting and the sugar crystals. The Note 9's shot is a close second because it's simply brighter and a bit more inviting.

The iPhone XS now gives you Depth Control, so you can tweak the depth of field after you shoot. This worked extremely well when I captured this picture of my colleague Adam. Using a slider, I could adjust the blur effect so that I could see the trees and some passersby behind him or make it so that I could  see only hints of those objects.

Does the iPhone XS beat the Pixel 2 XL at portraits with its two rear cameras? Not quite. In this shot of my colleague Caitlin, the iPhone XS' picture looks a bit too warm, while the exposure on the Pixel 2 XL looks more natural given the lighting conditions. Plus, you can make out more detail in her hair and her face looks brighter. The Note 9's shot looks great, but the left side of Caitlin's face looks blown out.

The iPhone XS' camera is good at close-ups, too, but the Pixel 2 XL edged it out. While the iPhone captured a brighter photo of this yellow flower,  Google's camera let us see the specs in the leaves better, and the green leaves around it look more saturated.

    Click above to expand

In one more low-light test, the iPhone XS took the brightest shot of this clock in Grand Central, and there's less noise on the signs in the background as you zoom in. But the gold resonates more on the clock in both the photos from the Pixel 2 XL and the Note 9.
